Why I’m doing the Kilt Walk for Leuchie.

Hi, I’m Ann and I’ve had an allegiance to Leuchie since my first visit twenty years ago.

In 2000 I had my first break at Leuchie with my husband, Jim, and our two young sons. Jim had MS and needed a lot of care so the holiday at Leuchie gave us all a real lift. The staff, while providing such a high level of care, are always so cheerful and want to ensure everyone is happy. From that period on we would enjoy respite breaks two or three times a year, knowing it as a place of rest, respite and fun.

When Leuchie was under threat of closure I actually felt panic as there was nowhere else providing respite holidays with the complex care requirements Jim needed. I came to depend on the rest that the breaks at Leuchie enabled me to have. It helped me to cope at home when I knew I had a relaxing break to look forward to.

I know what a special place Leuchie is. Staff want to help the guests have a fun holiday. They also ensure the Carers have a real break too. You truly feel at home. It’s such a relaxing atmosphere that I surprised myself on one holiday by singing karaoke for the first time ever because I felt so at ease. You’re among friends and no one wants to judge you.

I want Leuchie to thrive so other families can experience the support and enjoyment that meant so much to my family. That’s why I saw it as an honour to serve as a Trustee for an extended period from Leuchie's relaunch as a stand alone charity till this year.

I raise funds for Leuchie whenever I can. Over the years I’ve organised dances, concerts and quiz nights and distributed collection cans around Paisley. I’ve just signed up for the 2020 virtual Kilt Walk. This year participants can set their own challenge as the conventional gathering is not feasible. My friend, Doreen, and I have chosen to cycle round Millport in aid of Leuchie. Sir Tom Hunter has generously offered to add 50% to all money raised for charities through the Kilt Walk.

Doreen also admires Leuchie and has raised funds for the charity too. She has helped me with some of my fundraising events and a few years ago she did a sponsored climb of Machu Picchu in Peru. I don’t think Millport will be quite as big a challenge but we are hoping our friends and family will support our efforts.

I’ve met lots of lovely people through Leuchie, guests and staff. I think the happy relaxed atmosphere brings out the best in people. I will always be glad to be part of the Leuchie family.
