Legacy FAQs

Your legacy to Leuchie will make a real difference

Gifts in wills are often the greatest gift a person can make. At Leuchie, legacy gifts are fundamental in helping us to deliver on our commitment to support people with long term conditions such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, stroke and Parkinson’s by giving them an essential respite break, tailored to their unique needs. 24-hour specialist care enables us to give our guests an outstanding holiday experience, irrespective of their condition, whilst providing an invaluable break for their carers.

If, after you have looked after your loved ones, you choose to leave a gift to Leuchie in your will, however large or small, you will know that you are helping to give future generations of guests and carers access to unique and empowering short breaks, enabling families to stay together at home for longer.

How do I leave a gift to Leuchie House in my will?

Your solicitor will be able to guide you on making a gift in your will. To start with, if you have not already made a will, do so. If you already have a will, speak to your solicitor about any changes you would like to make to it.

What types of gifts can you leave?

A residuary gift: After you have provided for your loved ones, you can leave a share of the remainder of your estate to Leuchie House.

A pecuniary gift: This is when you leave an exact sum of money to Leuchie House.

A specific gift: This is when you leave a particular item to Leuchie House. It may be anything from piece of art to antique jewellery.

How will I know what to write?

You simply need to declare in your will that you would like to leave a gift to Leuchie House (Charity No. SC042249) and include our details: Leuchie House, North Berwick, EH39 5NT. We recommend you do seek the advice of your solicitor, who will guide you on this.

Do I need to tell you if I’ve left a gift to Leuchie House in my will?

You do not need to tell us if you have left a gift to Leuchie in your will. If you would like to let us know of your intentions or have any questions at all, please do call us on 01620 892 864 or email us at legacies@leuchiehouse.org.uk. You will be under no obligation to make a gift in your will.

Of course, if you do choose to inform us, we would love the opportunity to thank you by inviting you to events and keeping you up to date with news about Leuchie and our plans for the future.

I’m not wealthy, is it worth me donating?

You don't need to be wealthy to leave a gift to charity in your will. Legacy gifts, large or small, are all greatly valued and are an essential contribution towards our philanthropic income, helping to sustain what we do – supporting people with long term conditions and their carers and families.

Can I specify how you use my gift?

We understand that you may want to leave a gift to a specific area close to your heart and you're entitled to do this. We do, however, encourage gifts left to us to be unrestricted and trust that we will use your gift where it is most needed at Leuchie at the time.

Will my gift to Leuchie House be subject to inheritance tax?

Every legacy made to a charitable body is free of inheritance tax, and this can often be a motivation to leave a legacy gift to a charity when writing your will. If you leave a significant proportion of your estate to charity, your estate may benefit from an overall reduced rate of inheritance tax. We recommend you talk to your solicitor for more details on tax exemptions and benefits.
