Volunteer role: meal assistance and guest engagement

I have been a volunteer at Leuchie House since January 2018.

I am currently in my third year of the Bsc Honours Nursing degree course at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. My future goal is to work as a nurse in the community. Therefore volunteering at Leuchie is a great opportunity for me to gain insight into the care available for people in a community setting.

I also truly admire and respect the work that Leuchie does providing care to people with long term conditions.

In my volunteering role, I assist guests with their meals and I also sometimes help out in the afternoon with the daily guest engagement activities. I volunteer twice a week on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon or evening.

I really enjoy meeting and getting to know the new guests who arrive every fortnight, as well seeing guests who have returned to Leuchie.

Already I have developed my skills in meeting and interacting with new people, and in assisting guests with swallowing difficulties during meal times. I feel I have also gained a greater understanding of the needs of people with long term conditions which will only be beneficial in my future role as a nurse.

Deciding to volunteer at Leuchie is by far one of the best decisions I have ever made. The staff are very friendly and always make you feel welcome. The guests are great to chat to as they always have interesting stories to tell.

If you are looking to spend your free time doing something enjoyable yet worthwhile then Leuchie is definitely the place to be.
