The Leuchie Reserve

The result of an exciting new fundraising project for Leuchie, The Leuchie Reserve single malt whisky was launched to coincide with Burns’ Night 2017.

This celebratory 15 year old single cask Islay malt was distilled at Bowmore Distillery in 2001, with a production run of only 216 individually numbered bottles. A 52.5% volume malt, it has been produced as a limited release to raise funds for Leuchie House and to mark Leuchie’s fifth year as an independent charity.

Leuchie’s Head of Business Development, Carolyn Roulstone, explained how the project had come about. “We were thrilled to be offered the opportunity by Ian Macleod Distillers to have this limited edition bottling of the Bowmore 2001 single cask malt to help raise funds for Leuchie House. It’s the first time we’ve been involved in anything like this at Leuchie so it’s a unique and exciting extension to our fundraising activities.

“We’ve had lots of local support to bring the whisky to market: from creating a striking and original design for the bottle labels, to writing tasting notes, to putting it on sale. We’re extremely grateful for all the help we’ve received. All the profits from sales of the Leuchie Reserve will help ensure people with MS, Parkinson’s and other long term conditions are able to get the respite breaks they desperately need.”

During the project an interesting connection was uncovered. Bowmore Distillery where the charity whisky was distilled was built in 1779, the same year that Sir Hew Dalrymple commissioned the building of Leuchie House.

Tasting notes by whisky writer Charlie Maclean

Appearance:  Pale gold; Chardonnay; refill American oak. Good texture.
Aroma:    An initial scent of ripe pears and apples soon gives way to maritime notes (sand, sea-salt, seaweed, iodine). A drop of water modifies these aromas, introduces spice, machine oil and a whiff of smoke. Fresh and delicate overall.
Taste:    The taste is surprisingly sweet, with some acidity and distinct saltiness in the mid-palate, and peppery spice in the medium-length finish, which is warming and lightly smoky, as one would expect from Bowmore.
Comment:       An elegant example of the make, with plenty of character. Best enjoyed with a little water.
