Prov Johnstone Band

Bringing together an eclectic mix of musicians and music, the Prov Johnstone Band went down a storm at last year's Hops in the Garden, so we're hugely excited that they're back for Hops 2017! Expect a set full of raw energy, unbounded enthusiasm and some of the best Soul, R&B and Rock and Roll dance music from the last 40 years.

The band

Formed in 2004 to play for a leukaemia fund raising event, Stars in your eyes, at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange in memory of the late Prov Johnstone, the Prov Johnstone Band now play several times each year for good causes.

To date they have helped raise in excess of £150,000 for various charities. For the last seven years they have played at the Jam House after one of the Home Six Nations Rugby Internationals to raise much needed funds and awareness for Hearts and Balls, a charity which supports seriously injured rugby players.

Primarily a dance band, they are equally at home playing a mixture of Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll.

The line up

A mixture of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians, the band enjoy, amongst other things, each others’ company, having a great time and playing music for others who also enjoy having a good time!

Hamish McGregor, who was the front man and alto saxophone/clarinet player with Fat Sam’s Band, is one of the vocals and directs the horn section, which includes Lindsey Ford on trumpet and Pete Bruce on tenor saxophone.

Eric Wales, guitar/bass and vocals, also played with Fat Sam’s Band in addition to his own dance band (Fayne and the Cruisers) and has previously recorded as Wales/O’Regan. He also writes music for films.

Chris Thomson, guitar and vocals, was the founder member of the 1970s Edinburgh-based band ‘Café Jacques’, which has recently re-formed.

Stuart Knox, vocals and acoustic guitar, has played solo acoustic sets around Europe for over 30 years.

His son James also sings and plays acoustic guitar and helps out on drums if Andy ‘Mr Boom’ Munro, the famous children’s entertainer, is unavailable.

The full line-up is completed by Colin Hepburn (world champion senior badminton player!) on keyboards (also plays with Fayne and the Cruisers), Roy Martin (Bass), Simon Paterson-Brown on guitar, and the three beautiful backing singers, Sheila, Claire and Sue.
