I've only just started volunteering at Leuchie and you could say I was roped into it by my husband!

He's been gardening at Leuchie House for about a year and told me they could do with another gardener, so I started helping out a couple of weeks ago.

I've volunteered all my life so it seemed a natural thing to do. I also grew up with a good understanding of people with disabilities because from around the age of four I had a friend with cerebral palsy.  As a result, I know just how important it is to see the person behind the disability.

I enjoy the peaceful environment at Leuchie so I'm looking forward to working around the grounds and to developing my gardening skills as a result. My first challenge is to find plants that won't get eaten by the resident deer!

It's good too to be able to chat with guests and staff that I meet around the house and grounds. I'm sure my gain will be in being inspired by the achievements of many of the guests, while hopefully bringing enjoyment to them eventually through a neat and tidy, colourful garden. Providing the deer stay away!

I just love the hotel atmosphere at Leuchie too. I've run a guest house before and I've also worked with people with disabilities, and I'm enthralled by the way Leuchie has combined the two so successfully.

It's great to do something that is useful and to be among a group of people who are also people-oriented.

For anyone thinking about volunteering at Leuchie, I'd say 'do it even if you think you can't!' After all, look at what the guests at Leuchie achieve.
