Volunteer role: admin support

I’ve been a volunteer at Leuchie House since September 2016.

After graduating and travelling I worked in several different administrative positions, before providing 'virtual' admin support from home.  After the birth of my second child I gave up employment and began volunteering in various roles within playgroups and the local school.

A friend of mine works at Leuchie and she told me that they were always looking for people to help as volunteers.  When my youngest child started Primary 1, I felt I had the time to help out.  I wanted to commit to do something more with my week but wasn't ready for paid employment.

At Leuchie, I help the office team two days a week, normally for two to four hours each day.  I provide admin assistance and support to whoever needs it that day, from marketing to HR to the CEO’s PA, and occasionally I cover reception, answering the phone and greeting visitors.

Everyone is so friendly and there is such a positive attitude amongst all the staff and other volunteers.  I love being back in an office with the chat, and it’s great to be busy and feel useful.

It has definitely helped me get back up to speed with office and IT procedures.  My skills were quite rusty and I was very under-confident.  I have had help and support whenever needed and I now have the confidence to carry out independently any tasks I am asked to help with.

It's a lovely environment to volunteer in and you are always made to feel welcome.  You can do as much as you feel able to and there are always people to ask if you are unsure of anything.

The best thing for me is that I am gaining work experience in a place which does so much to help others.
